11 March 2026 | Art dialogue in ROME: About the reception of the Classics | Susanna de Beer &Elisa Pesapane

The main character of this multidisciplinary artwork is a modern and very young Odysseus who travels by ship with his little brother and a peculiar crew between past and present, in search of lost humanity. Central to this story is Etruscan culture, where seafaring, mythology and an open world view come together with the curiosity of the traveler, the stranger who brings enrichment. It is a personal story that also touches on contemporary themes such as identity and migration and offers a fresh and accessible path for young and old to Etruscan art and culture.

During this art dialogue Elisa Pesapane will be interviewed by Susanna de Beer about the practices and genesis of her work, the interaction between art and scholarship, and the inspiration drawn from Italy’s historical and contemporary inhabitants. Part of her work-in-progress will also be on display.

About the speakers

Elisa Pesapane studied at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (KABK) and Italian language and culture at Universiteit Leiden. Her monumental drawings and paintings are “tragicomedies written with images instead of words,” in which, beneath the surface, new human stories continually emerge about birth and expectation, joy, shame, failure, hope, death, and despair.

Susanna de Beer is Director of Ancient Studies and Classical Receptions at the KNIR, and Endowed Professor of the Receptions of Antiquity at Groningen University
